About the Role
We need a seismologist who can code for our Haiti Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) project. Our current system uses ObsPy packages with STA/LTA picking and GaMMA for event association, but we need someone to make it more sophisticated. You'll explore and implement modern ML approaches like PhaseNet and other state-of-the-art detection methods.
This is perfect for a recent graduate or early-career seismologist with strong coding skills. You'll work closely with our backend developer - we have the infrastructure plumbing in place, we need your seismological expertise to test and implement better detection algorithms. Your work will directly save lives in one of the world's most seismically vulnerable regions.
Responsibilities
- Improve existing ObsPy-based detection system with more sophisticated algorithms
- Test and implement ML-based phase picking methods (PhaseNet, EQTransformer, etc.)
- Optimize STA/LTA parameters and explore alternative picking algorithms
- Enhance event association beyond current GaMMA implementation
- Work closely with backend developer to integrate improved algorithms
- Validate detection accuracy and reduce false positives for Haiti's seismic profile
- Research and implement state-of-the-art seismological detection methods
Requirements
- Degree in Seismology, Geophysics, or related field (recent grads welcome)
- Strong Python programming skills
- Experience with ObsPy or similar seismological processing libraries
- Understanding of earthquake detection methods (STA/LTA, phase picking, event association)
- Ability to implement and test different detection algorithms
- Experience working with large seismic datasets - reformatting public earthquake data, adding synthetic noise, preparing training data
- Collaborative mindset to work with existing backend team
Nice to Have
- Postgraduate degree in seismology or geophysics
- Experience with ML-based seismic detection (PhaseNet, EQTransformer, etc.)
- Familiarity with GaMMA or other association algorithms
- Knowledge of real-time seismic processing
- Experience with earthquake early warning systems
- Understanding of Caribbean/Haiti seismicity
